SUMMARY:February Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1913\, and on the surface\, Laura Lyons couldn’t ask for more out of life—her husband is the superintendent of the New York Public Library\, allowing their family to live in an apartment within the grand building\, and they are blessed with two children. But headstrong\, passionate Laura wants more\, and when she takes a leap of faith and applies to the Columbia Journalism School\, her world is cracked wide open. \n\n\n\nEighty years later\, in 1993\, Sadie Donovan struggles with the legacy of her grandmother\, the famous essayist Laura Lyons\, especially after she’s wrangled her dream job as a curator at the New York Public Library. But the job quickly becomes a nightmare when rare manuscripts\, notes\, and books for the exhibit Sadie’s running begin disappearing from the library’s famous Berg Collection. Determined to save both the exhibit and her career\, the typically risk-averse Sadie teams up with a private security expert to uncover the culprit.

SUMMARY:January Book Club
DESCRIPTION:It says quite a lot about Jeremy Johnson Johnson that the strangest thing about him isn’t even the fact his mother and father both had the same last name. Jeremy once admitted he’s able to hear voices\, and the townspeople of Never Better have treated him like an outsider since. After his mother left\, his father became a recluse\, and it’s been up to Jeremy to support the family. But it hasn’t been up to Jeremy alone. The truth is\, Jeremy can hear voices. Or\, specifically\, one voice: the voice of the ghost of Jacob Grimm\, one half of the infamous writing duo\, The Brothers Grimm.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:At an early age\, Ruth Reichl discovered that “food could be a way of making sense of the world. . . . If you watched people as they ate\, you could find out who they were.” Her deliciously crafted memoir\, Tender at the Bone \, is the story of a life determined\, enhanced\, and defined in equal measure by a passion for food\, unforgettable people\, and the love of tales well told.  Beginning with Reichl’s mother\, the notorious food-poisoner known as the Queen of Mold\, Reichl introduces us to the fascinating characters who shaped her world and her tastes\, from the gourmand Monsieur du Croix\, who served Reichl her first soufflé\, to those at her politically correct table in Berkeley who championed the organic food revolution in the 1970s.  Spiced with Reichl’s infectious humor and sprinkled with her favorite recipes\, Tender at the Bone is a witty and compelling chronicle of a culinary sensualist’s coming-of-age.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In June 2021\, a senseless event upends the lives of hundreds of men and women\, all passengers on a flight from Paris to New York. Among them: Blake\, a respectable family man\, though he works as a contract killer; Slimboy\, a Nigerian pop star tired of living a lie; Joanna\, a formidable lawyer whose flaws have caught up with her; and Victor Miesel\, a critically acclaimed yet commercially unsuccessful writer who suddenly becomes a cult hit. All of them believed they had double lives. None imagined just how true that was. \n\n\n\nThis witty variation on the doppelgänger theme\, which takes us on a journey from Lagos and Mumbai to the White House\, is Hervé Le Tellier’s most ambitious work yet.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In Berlin\, at the time when the world changed\, Hanni Kohn knows she must send her twelve-year-old daughter away to save her from the Nazi regime. She finds her way to a renowned rabbi\, but it’s his daughter\, Ettie\, who offers hope of salvation when she creates a mystical Jewish creature\, a rare and unusual golem\, who is sworn to protect Lea. Once Ava is brought to life\, she and Lea and Ettie become eternally entwined\, their paths fated to cross\, their fortunes linked. \n\n\n\nLea and Ava travel from Paris\, where Lea meets her soulmate\, to a convent in western France known for its silver roses; from a school in a mountaintop village where three thousand Jews were saved. Meanwhile\, Ettie is in hiding\, waiting to become the fighter she’s destined to be. \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to lose your mother? How much can one person sacrifice for love? In a world where evil can be found at every turn\, we meet remarkable characters that take us on a stunning journey of loss and resistance\, the fantastical and the mortal\, in a place where all roads lead past the Angel of Death and love is never ending.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:“Last Night I Dreamt I went to Manderley Again…” \n\n\n\nWith these words\, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast\, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten—a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper\, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched\, clothing laid out and ready to be worn\, but not by any of the great house’s current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart\, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor\, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim’s first wife—the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca.

SUMMARY:Catching Up With the Classics Book Club
DESCRIPTION:“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language—Tolkien’s prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth\, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale\, The Hobbit is one of literature’s most enduring and well-loved novels. \n\n\n\nBilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable\, unambitious life\, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent\, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest\, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

DESCRIPTION:Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced\, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up one day to extort money from her\, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato\, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor. Overhearing the commotion\, Yasuko’s next door neighbor\, middle-aged high school mathematics teacher Ishigami\, offers his help\, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step.When the body turns up and is identified\, Detective Kusanagi draws the case and Yasuko comes under suspicion. Kusanagi is unable to find any obvious holes in Yasuko’s manufactured alibi and yet is still sure that there’s something wrong. Kusanagi brings in Dr. Manabu Yukawa\, a physicist and college friend who frequently consults with the police. Yukawa\, known to the police by the nickname Professor Galileo\, went to college with Ishigami. After meeting up with him again\, Yukawa is convinced that Ishigami had something to do with the murder.
